The city of Malmö is Copenhagen’s rapidly growing Swedish neighbour. The density of the city has increased markedly during the last 20 years and new urban areas are continuously emerging. Dorte Mandrup’s contribution to the new area known as Malmö Live is – besides the initial masterplan – a unique office building, designed to live and let live in dense environments. With a hypersensitivity to the surrounding buildings, the Malmö office is considerate of its neighbours – remaining mindful not to steal the daylight. As such, the office building is not only well-mannered, it is also quite beautiful with its intelligent approach too light diffusing. Kind, beautiful and smart!Read more ↓
In close collaboration with the city architect of Malmö, Vandkunsten, and Johan Celsing, Dorte Mandrup conducted a series of volumetric studies and analysis, exploring the possibilities of how to create a balance in the area of Malmö LIVE. This balancing act considers the Malmö LIVE Concerthouse and neighbouring Conference & Hotel spaces, offices, shops and surrounding on-site housing. The balance is found in seeking the best urban spaces and scale relations between all the various components of the area.
The new office building designed by Dorte Mandrup is situated in the north-western corner of the area on the masterplan. The site relates to the big scale of the harbour, the large surrounding streets and the lower neighbouring buildings.
The building is shaped by four volumes of differing heights, pinned together by large glass openings that culminate in a 9 storey tower with a distinct identity. The four volumes of the building gradually down-scale, displaying a transition as in the masterplan which indulges optimal light and viewing conditions and ensures the same can be said for the housing block next-door.
During the process, design focus was placed upon creating a facade with a significant architectural expression as well as integrating numerable sustainability measures that meet the highest standards for modern buildings, to obtain the LEED Platinum certification.
